I love it when packing day comes around each month for the SherbetBox, all the hard work has come together and suddenly there the box I had dreamed up in my head is in front of me!
The table groans from piles of boxes, stationery, tape, stickers and tissue paper as the production line is set up. I stick on music or a podcast, keep my mug topped up with tea and then it's heads down to start the packing.
Just a couple of weeks before, all the stationery I have in front of me was just a bunch of ideas in my head and doodles on a pad. I announce a new theme each month and then have to create a collection of stationery around it, always trying to keep the SherbetBox different and fresh. I turn those pencil doodles into illustrations - some by traditional painting, some by digital illustration. Some of these are then sent off to the printers while some of the items I produce in my studio so I also begin printing, cutting out, gluing and assembling while I wait for the rest of the stationery to arrive.
When packing day begins I am soon in a rhythm, flat packed box assembled, tissue in, stationery taken from each pile and then the tissue kept in place with a sticker. I sign each note that goes in explaining a little behind the box and then the box is sealed.
Once all the address labels are on and international orders have their customs stickers, I'm done apart from the Post Office run. Now time to fret about all the boxes arriving safely, whether people will love their box or not and then it's on to next month's theme!
I love the SherbetBox. It fits in so well around my book illustration work and is a welcome break to be able to have fun illustrating and drawing what I want to...the SherbetBox has become the favourite part of my working month.
